I am currently up in Mooloolaba, on the Sunshine Coast in Queensland. I was fortunate enough to be given the Physio job for the Team ITU, heading into the Mooloolaba World Cup, one of the biggest races on the Australian calendar, especially for the professional athletes.
I am working for the ‘Team ITU’, which are a group of sponsored athletes that have been selected as potentials for Olympic selection and hopeful medal candidates. The group is sponsored by the International Triathlon Union, which is based in Lausanne, Switzerland and Vancouver, Canada. The athletes are typically from countries that do not have a strong financial backing for triathlon and has greatly assisted the rise of many Olympians, including Barbara Riveros and Lisa Norden.
In the team currently are athletes from all over the world, including; Slovakia, Slovenia, Israel, Sweden and Estonia. They are a fantastic bunch of athletes, all very supportive of each other and the staff who are working with them.
All the athletes arrived in Mooloolaba early this week, from all over the world. Since then, I have been treating them all each day, in between the several training sessions that they have. This has been a great opportunity for me to get some good training in with them also! Days mostly have been starting with riding at 6am, followed by swimming training at midday, where we have lanes booked each day and running in the afternoons.
It should be a very interesting weekend of racing coming up, with the elite men’s World Cup on Saturday afternoon and the ladies on Sunday. Along with that, Sunday morning is the age group race, so it will be a great weekend of triathlon on the cards!
