Port Mac IM has been a regular yearly event for me for the last 3 years, not to say that I am an IM legend yet but having down a few means that I am not standing in the shower on race morning dry retching 😉 hey Shannon. Preparation for 2012 started the day after finishing last years race (4 weeks of eating and drinking is classed as R&R and is all part of the 12 month plan!. Training under Alex is especially helpful during the prep as half of the problem is holding yourself back from being uber motivated about next years race and cooking yourself early, or as Alex would put it “baking the cake on too higher temp too soon”. But then when its time to turn it up he makes sure it all happens at the right time.
Some of the key learnings and benefits from this years prep with AP10:
- Being able to handle higher intensity workouts and how these tie into getting ironman fit when you are racing compared to completing;
- Alex’s methods come from a network of the best athletes, coaches and professionals;
- Nutritional guidance;
- Customised programming;
- Correct swim technique (PB this year);
- Motivation during those tough workouts.
The race this year for me was executed 100% to plan leading to a PR for the course and I learnt alot, some fine tuning on my part should make a big difference for the next one. Perfect weather and being to share the race with my family and the AP10 and other athletes was a special moment. I look forward to Melbourne IM 2013 as I know what the potential for this race holds.
